Goal:

Application of digital methods in designing and production of topographic maps, thematic maps and cartographic representation other than maps.

Description:

Description of lectures:

Advantages and disadvantages of digital cartography. Cartographic data. Basic terms from topology. Types and forms of cartographic data. Hardware: computer, digitisers, plotters. Digitising: manual and automatic (scanning). Processing of vector data. Transformation of co-ordinates from local system of digitiser into the system of map projection or geographic co-ordinates. Calculating the area from digitised points. Point-in-polygon algorithm. Intersection of a line and a polygon. Processing of raster data. Graphic programs. Thematic maps. Choropleth maps. Determination of class boundaries. Dot maps. Digital terrain models. Relief representation by means of contouring and shading. Visibility maps. Application of remote sensing in cartography. Geocoding. The most important satellites and sensors for cartography. Topographic maps. Updating. New graphics of topographic maps. Digital cartographic systems. Electronic maps and atlases. Cartography and geoinformation systems. National topographic and cartographic databases. Map lettering. Cartography, GIS and Internet.

Program of exercises:

(1) Scan portion of map and process it in Photoshop. (2) Vectorise simple map with signatures, text etc. in AutoCAD and CorelDraw. (3) Prepare in PowerPoint the presentation of a cartographic theme with text and pictures. (4) Find on the Internet web pages with a cartographic contents, describe it and make comments in written form.
