More than a million migrants and refugees crossed into Europe in 2015 and 2016, sparking a crisis as countries struggled to cope with the influx, and creating division in the EU over how best to deal with resettling people. The main migratory routes into the EU are: Western African routes, Western Mediterranean routes, Central Mediterranean routes, Eastern Mediterranean routes, Eastern Borders route, Apulia and Calabria route, Circular route from Albania to Greece, Western Balkan route, Western African routes.
